According to local lore, the unsightly community offended the eye of Henry Flagler, known as the founder of Palm Beach, and other town fathers. In a magnanimous-appearing gesture, they invited the entire population of the Styx over to West Palm Beach to a circus performance and barbecue, and during their absence burned the shantytown to the ground. There are endless stories of acutely embarrassing situations that have occurred when people have brought Jewish friends to the clubs and the friends have been asked to leave the golf course, or the tennis courts, or the dining room. But they’re there, behind their walls, just as the grand lady said to me, and their social life, for those of them who like social life, is relentless. The main characters, Mickey and Rebecca, are somewhat well portrayed, but you never feel like you get beneath the surface of any character, including the Stones, although Astrid Stone may be the most complex character in the book. There is supposed to be a “shocking secret“ about the Stones, but in reality, it’s not really shocking at all. The ending feels rushed, and a bit flat, which was disappointing since most of the book was pretty good. An enjoyable read about a young couple  who move to Palm Beach to work for a billionaire couple.
